May 29, 2004: Gulf Shores, Alabama

A Memorial Day Weekend 2004 dive
"YDT-15" - "Pete Tide" - "Russian Freighter"
--------------------------------------------------

First day of diving. I was happy to hear that the water was going to be at least 72 F - but then if you don't do it regularly, or have a lot of thermal protection, even that's cold.
Diving in the Gulf of Mexico off of Gulf Shores:
  • Directions from Tampa: I was staying in Pensacola; but I-75 North, and then I-10 West should get you close enough.
  • Conditions on the day of my visit: Cloudy. We got some rain early, if I remember correctly.

  • Personal Notes: The first wreck we did was a Dive Tender, YDT-15. Lots of growth - it's been down there at least a little while.

Pete Tide I remember being fun but I can't remember any vivid details.

The Russian Freighter overshadowed most dives because we saw what has become a rare sight in Gulf waters: A manta ray. In the visibility (which dropped to 60 in some places) you couldn't see that it was a manta, until it got close.

Oh, no pictures - didn't take the camera on this trip.
