August 20, 2000: Weeki Wachee, Florida
"Weeki Wachee"
|
|
First time I've ever really had to do anything that involved "Stress and Rescue."
Diving in the land of the Mermaids:
- Directions from Tampa: Weeki Wachee is just south of the intersection of State Road 19 and State Road 50. Weeki Wachee is technically it's own city, but I've seen it referred to as part of Brooksville, as well as part of Spring Hill.
- Conditions on the day of my visit: Sunny initially, some scattered rain here and there; comfortable in the afternoon.
- Personal Notes: The exciting event this day was watching a group of four diving, seeing them play (at least, it looked originally liked they were playing) near one of the swim throughs, were the flow shoots up from the cave. I went through one of the swim throughs and found out that one young lady, seemingly wedged under an outcropping, had actually lost her tank, and she seemed unwilling to move. Realizing that there was no way I was going to get the tank back into her BC at that spot (as it was, had I let go of the rocks I probably would have been blown up 10 or 20 feet), I grabbed her tank and eased her to a seat above the swim throughs. After some fighting with her BC and the tank (which was wrapped in that tank webbing stuff), I got her tank secured and got her back to diving.
